BHP pays $50m to settle US case amid ongoing Brazil dam talks

BHP said Thursday it had reached $50m settlement related to Samarco dam disaster with plaintiffs who had purchased American depositary receipts.

Under the terms of the agreement, BHP had agreed to pay the plaintiffs US$50 million, with no admission of liability. The agreement is subject to approval by the District Court.

The company also said that the federal court of Minas Gerais approved an agreement with Brazilian authorities that settled a 20B reais ($5.3B) lawsuit. This would allow talks to continue as the company progresses toward settling the BRL155 billion civil claim. At 8:00am: (LON:BLT) BHP Billiton PLC share price was +34.8p at 1753.8p
