User Guide

1. Starting MoneyAM Mobile

If you are using a Sony-Ericsson P800, P900 or a Compaq iPaq, download the appropriate installer to your PC and double click to install the software. Users of the Compaq iPaq must also install the JEODE Java environment from the CD supplied with the device.

Once you have installed MoneyAM Mobile, start it by clicking on the MoneyAM Mobile icon. This can be found in the applications list on the P800, P900 and under Programs on the iPaq. Before launching on the iPaq you should connect your device to the internet. The P800, P900 will automatically connect to the internet when required.

If you are using a device other than the iPaq, P800 or P900 you will need to follow these steps:

  • Download the file moneyam.jar and copy it to your device.
  • Run moneyam.jar using the Java environment on your device. This may be as simple as clicking or double-clicking on the moneyam.jar file, or you may need to take additional steps - consult the documentation for your Java environment for more details. The file moneyam.jar is an executable JAR file. If your Java environment does not support executable jars, the class you will need to pass to the Java environment to start the application is 'Shares'.

You can also run the software on a PC or Macintosh with Java installed. You may prefer to download the file moneyam-pc.jar as this has an aspect ratio suitable for viewing on a full size screen. Double-click on the jar file or, on Linux, type: java -jar moneyam-pc.jar

  • Please note that to install these applications on your mobile device, you should view this site and download using the browser on your PC - not the browser on your mobile device itself. Once the software is downloaded to your PC, the synchronization software which came with your device will then install it there using the built-in synchronization mechanism which works with your device's provided mobile cradle connected to the PC.
  • Please note also that when using the provided software on your mobile device, you should log in using the special mobile account provided separately - not the usual MoneyAM account. The user ID is generally the same as your ordinary user ID but with a capital M added on the end. P800, P900 users please note that you may need to switch off handwriting recognition to avoid getting an unwanted full stop in the entry field at the beginning of your user ID.

2. Logging in

When MoneyAM Mobile is launched you are presented with the log in page. Enter your MoneyAM Username and password in the appropriate fields on the screen. Set the 'Save' field to 'Yes' if you want to save the password, so that you do not have to enter it next time. The username and password are saved locally on the device if you login successfully. Set the 'Save' field to 'No' if you do not want to save the username and password. This will remove any previously saved username and password from the device.

3. The Main View

After logging in, you are presented with the main view, shown in FIGURE 1. As well as the welcome message, there are three buttons to take you to the information pages and three buttons along the bottom for other functions. The three buttons in the middle are:

  • Streaming StockWatch. This takes you to the stockwatch view. If you have not already connected, this occurs automatically at this point.
  • Streaming Chart/Quote. This takes you to a more detailed view of an individual stock. If you have not previously been to this page, you are prompted for an EPIC code. If you are not already connected, entering an EPIC code and pressing Return will establish a connection.
Please note: EPIC codes must be entered in uppercase.
  • Recent News. This takes you to the news view. Going to the news page from the main view displays the last ten headlines from the news service. Once again, a connection is established at this point if you are not already connected.

The three buttons along the bottom are:

  • Options. This lets you change the timeout delay.
  • Status. This gives you information about your connection.
  • Exit. This exits from MoneyAM Mobile.

Heading Line
The heading line of the main view shows the live FTSE 100 index and updates in real time, once you are connected. It also shows, in brackets, two characters each of which can be either a plus sign (+) or a minus sign (-). These indicate whether or not you are currently connected. The first character refers to the stockwatch connection and the second refers to the Chart/Quote connection. A plus sign indicates that there is a current connection and a minus sign indicates that there is not.

4. Stockwatch View

The Stockwatch page shows the stocks you are monitoring. You can change these by editing the watchlist, as described in .Setting up a Watchlist. The title bar of the page shows the stockwatch page you are currently viewing, followed by the FTSE 100 price. The main body shows each stock, with current prices for each one. The current price, change and percentage change for each stock is updated as these values change. The price flashes when the value changes (red if the value decreases; blue if it increases, where relevant).

The stockwatch view is divided into a series of customizable pages, each showing a different subset and ordering of available data for each stock. Click the 'Page' button to cycle through these pages. See 'Customising the Stockwatch View' for details on how to customise pages.

Clicking on a heading sorts the values displayed by that column. The arrow in the heading shows the direction of sorting. Click the heading again to sort in the opposite direction.

The News column shows an 'N' icon if the stock has an associated news article today.
Click the icon to view today's headlines for that stock.

Click on 'Close' to return to the main view.

FIGURE 2 shows the stockwatch view as it appears on the Sony Ericsson P800.

Setting up a Watchlist

Click the 'Edit' button to display the 'Edit Watchlist' page in order to change the list of stocks you are viewing. Enter the Epic codes for the stocks that you are interested in into the text field. You can separate stocks by a new line or comma. When you have finished, click 'Done'. Your watchlist is saved on the device and you are returned to the stockwatch page.

Please note: EPIC codes must be entered in uppercase.

Customising the Stockwatch View

The pages displayed in the stockwatch view can be modified by clicking the 'Cust' button. The Customise view is displayed for the current page. Change the name of the page by editing the text field at the top of the page.

The fields named in the column on the left are not displayed on the page whereas the fields named in the column on the right are shown. To show a column, select it from the list on the right and click 'Show'. To remove a column from the display, select it from the list on the right and click 'Hide'. To reorder the displayed columns, select a column on the right and click 'Up' or 'Down' to move it up or down the list.

To edit the next page, click 'Next'. To insert a new page before the current page, click 'Add'. To delete the current page, click 'Del'. When you are happy with the pages, click 'Done' to return to the stockwatch view.

5. Chart/Quote View

Clicking on a row in the stockwatch view will take you to the detail view for that stock. This view shows some information about the stock (current price, open, close, bid and offer prices, last trade information, and the cumulative volume) along with a streaming chart showing the movement of that stock today. The chart will update live as the price changes. There are three prices shown on the Y axis: the minimum and maximum intraday prices at the top and bottom of the axis, and the current price in bold. A horizontal line is drawn across the chart at the current price, and also at the day's open price. The time is shown along the X axis. This is illustrated in FIGURE 3.

If a news article is available today for the stock, a News button will appear on the page. Click this button to view today's headlines for the stock.

6. News

Clicking a News icon on the stockwatch page, or the News button on the Chart/Quote view, will show a list of today.s headlines for the stock, as shown in FIGURE 4. Click on a headline to view the article.

Clicking on the Recent News button on the main page displays the last ten headlines from the news service.

7. Exiting MoneyAM Mobile

When you have finished with MoneyAM Mobile, go back to the main view and click 'Exit'. The application exits. You may also wish to disconnect your device from the internet, if this has not happened automatically.
